Professor Ruth Aylett and Professor Nick Taylor, on behalf of the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics, hosted a visit by the renowned roboticist Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University and the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute of Japan on Tuesday 18 November. (...)
Earlier in the day Professor Ishiguro had run a workshop entitled “Kids Love Robots” at St Mary’s primary school in Leith which was organised by Professor Ruth Aylett and colleagues in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences in conjunction with Professor Adrian Cheok of City University and Yoram Chisik of the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute.

Circuits for revolution: the artist who builds “outraged” robots

Previously, and independently, at MIT but now working at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute, Chris Csikszentmihalyi has over ten years’ experience in designing robots to be sent to war or used as a means of protest against political injustice. He does not understand how it is that military and weapon development can be promoted, but nobody has found a way to stop War. The big companies are not interested in investing in social technology.

The stroke: Virtual reality and "smart" sensors in future therapeutic

M-ITI is developing a project that, in addition to motion abilities, promises to assist in cognitive abilities' rehabilitation. The NeuroRehab Lab combines virtual scenarios with interactive tools to simulate activities of daily life and encourage the training of memory, language and attention.

AHA: Augmented Human Assistance

Applications are open until December 16th, through the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). Currently, there are still six ERIs in existence arising from the first contest held in 2013, a result that has pleased the national director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, João Claro. 

"It was a success, with the submission of 21 applications, which involved more than 50 companies, from multinationals to spin-off, with a volume of co-financing of over three million euros," said João Claro in a statement. For the second competition, he expects new ideas that will "strengthen the relationship between our institutions, Carnegie Mellon University and enterprises, thus capitalising on the talent we have attracted to the CMU Portugal Program".

Rui Alves is a Software Engineer and Research Member at M-ITI

Rui Alves has been interviewed at Olhar Indiscreto - a Tv show from the local Tv station RTP Madeira. Rui is a very experienced software engineer and he is also a PhD Student at UMa that has been working with us in several research projects from the past 3 years. He has experienced several different fields of software application systems in the industry for the past 10 years, working for AirBus Military base at Madrid, Spain - where he was responsible for the requisites specification and definition for the integration of some of the airplaines software systems. He also worked at GMV Portugal, where he managed an international team who has developed a project for the European Defense Agency, which is now being used by the European Army.

Christopher Csiksentmihályi has been appointed ERA (European Research Area) Chair of Human-Computer Interaction and Design Innovation at the Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute of the University of Madeira. Christopher C. is a very well known name in both research and education of this specific areas of Human-Computer Interaction, Arts and Design Innovation. He has been teaching, giving talks and conferences, as well as having his innovative projects exhibited for all over the world.

A Video game that aims to sensitize people for Energy Efficiency

Four Students from the Masters in Entertainment Technology offered by M-ITI in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, have worked with Museu Casa da Luz facing the challenge to create an interactive museum experience, aimed at younger audiences, that demonstrates how different energy scenarios impact communities and their environments, and encourages people to evaluate their own energy consumption habits - "Planeta Voltagem" is the name of the game created by Luís Ferreira, Paulo Bala, Rui Trindade and Dome Pongmongkol.

An adventure called M-ITI

Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute, well known as M-ITI, has borned in July of 2009. Five years later, we have talked to the president of the institute Nuno Nunes, who says that all efforts were much worth it and that future seems to hold even more promising steps for the institute. M-ITI is now presenting two new PhD programs in partnership with FEUP, UNL and IST, and has been expanding its national and international reputation along this years. Paulo Coelho is one of M-ITI's alumni from the Master in Human-Computer Interaction Program - which is held in partnership with Carnegie Mellon Univeristy - and is now working at Google. In his interview he recognizes the importance of the opportunities he had during the program, and he also thinks that students should leave their fears beside and take opportunities like this one, in order to experience different cultures, ideas and different countries.

M-ITI is developing a new mobile app to prevent or minimize accidents that occur in the Levadas Walks, in Madeira. This project is a direct request from the Civil Protection Regional Services, having in account the amount of accidents that, still happens in the Levadas, and is being developed by Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute in order to prevent and minimize these accidents. The application will help tourists and even local people to take less risks in this well known walking paths.

Madeira Interactive Technologies Insitute has enrolled in two more PhD Program Collaborations

M-ITI has enrolled two new Phd Program collaborations this year, in partnership with several portuguese and american universities.

The first one being in collaboration with FEUP/FCT-UNLfor a PhD in Digital Media with the possibility of a Dual Program Degree Partnership with the University of Texas in Austin, and the second one with IST-UL in Networked Interactive Cyber Physical Systems (NETSyS)with the possibility of a Dual Program Degree with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This collaborations are now a great possibility for master students from the several areas like: arts, design, informatisc engineering, social and communication sciences to have the opportunity to improve their expertise levels and skills in the areas o Digital Media and Networked Interactive Cyber Physical Systems, also with the chance to earn a scholarship from FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia).

Moche Regional Surf Championship took place last Saturday, 14th of June at Praia da Alagoa - Porto da Cruz. This event was promoted by ASRAM - Associação de Surf da Região Autónoma da Madeira together with Surf Clube da Madeira , Diário de Notícias Madeira  e Desenquadrado. M-ITI was also there, as one of the event sponsors, supporting the athletes and preparing some surprises for the winners of the competition.

University Students present films created in Kinectic Typography Workshop

On April 4th between 5 and 6 pm, a final presentation regarding the Kinectic Typography workshop in the last 3 weeks, tutored by Dan Boyarski a Carnegie Mellon School of Design professor, took place in the “Classroom” located in M-ITI facilities.
Kinectic Typography is an animation technique used in the virtual world and therefore a method to be explored by all of those who intend to work in the media technology domain.These projects were developed by students from the Msc in Computer Sciences, Informatic Engineering Phd, Professional Masters in Computer-Human Interaction, and Master in Entertainment Technology. The latter developed under the Carnegie Mellon | Portugal Partnership Program.

Madeira-ITI wins ERA Chair pilot call

Nuno Nunes, president of the Madeira-ITI and scientific director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, believes that this funding will allow "expand and maximize the potential of the Institute in terms of interdisciplinary research in interactive technologies, strengthening innovation and transfer of technology and knowledge in close collaboration with local and global business partners.

M-ITI is the only Portuguese Institute that won funds to create a new research team (ERA Chair). 

Eleven universities (including the M-ITI Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute UMa) and technical institutes in less developed regions of Europe will receive up to € 2.4 million each from EU funding to strengthen its research capacity through the appointment of the first 'Chairs of the European Research Area', today announced Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science.
